What to wear
Freddie’s costume designer and friend Diana Moseley gives us some hints on what to wear on September 3rd – Freddie for a Day.
Diana Moseley was Freddie's personal costume designer as well as creating the costumes for all of the band during its 1986 The Magic Tour. In addition she worked with Queen on 10 of their promos and a further 5 with Freddie. Her other work with legends of the music industry include David Bowie, Jeff Beck, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, and Tina Turner among them. Diana works extensively in film and television and is presently working on a new BBC TV drama series.
She became a close personal friend to Freddie and spent many hours in his company in his final days. She movingly recalled these times with Freddie in the official TV documentary 'Freddie Mercury: The Untold Story'.
Hello I'm Diana, and here are my suggestions and tips for creating a Freddie costume.
First, choose your costume to copy, your favourite or something that you can manage easily.
Above all have fun and involve family, friends, work colleagues, clubs and schools.
Bat Wing Freddie
(Zandra Rhodes designed Bat Wing suit, leather wrist strap and jewelry)
To make this white top create a poncho shape from a full circle of white fabric, such as an old bed sheet.
Measure the length of your body from the base of your back neck down to below your hips/bottom. You could use a piece of string.
This will give you the radius of your poncho circle.
Draw onto your fabric using the string and a pencil as your compass.
Cut a circular hole in the middle of the fabric, large enough to go over your head.
Put the poncho on and get a pal to draw/mark with a pencil, a line from under each arm straight down the sides of your body front and back.
Sew these lines together to create the batwing sleeves. Then carefully press in the pleats with an iron.
(Leather biker gear, including aviator sunglasses and cap)
For this costume go on-line to find a local supplier of FETISH CLOTHING for a PVC biker jacket, matching trousers and peaked cap.
(Any of FM’s various all in one leotards)
Freddie had many full body leotard outfits.
These you can find from local BALLET AND DANCE WEAR suppliers for both women, men and children.
Buy fabric paints (DYLON have lots of colours) and paint on any design you like.
If you feel adventurous and know how to use a sewing machine, buy lycra fabric and stitch on designs... use a zig-zag stitch as lycra is a stretch fabric!
(Red and white striped shorts and red braces)
Look for white tennis shorts or cut the legs of white trousers to make shorts. Try second hand or charity shops.
Then paint on the stripes with fabric paint or stitch on ribbon to make the stripes.
(Coronation Street spoof from I Want To Break Free video. Black bobbed wig, pink knitted top, short black skirt, fishnets and high heels)
Look for similar clothing in charity shops or street markets.
Pad a bra with wadding from haberdashery shops.
Cut the arms of a pink polo neck jumper to make the top.
Don't forget the earrings, stockings and suspenders!
Be inventive such as using paper and paints to make cut-out Freddies, like full sized paper dolls. Or full sized cut-outs such as you used to find at the seaside. Then photograph all the family, friends or even your whole street standing behind the cut-outs with just their heads showing.
Children could dress up their favorite toys, teddy-bears and dolls. Dress up a whole street or club in the same outfit and create a Freddie marching band !
Make it a fun day! I can't wait to see what you all come up with!
